Position Description:

The Department of Anesthesiology’s Vice Chair for Academic Affairs will be a crucial part of our leadership team, responsible for implementing the strategic objectives of the Medical College of Wisconsin with respect to education and development. The Vice Chair will also provide mentorship and career guidance to our faculty, ensuring that all are involved in both the academic and clinical missions of the Department, increasing faculty engagement and retention, and anticipating promotion.

Responsibilities of the Position:

In partnership with the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, the Department’s Executive Leadership Team, the Core Residency Program Director, the Departmental Leadership and the Department Administrator, the Vice Chair is accountable for:

  • Effectively role modeling quality, patient centered comprehensive care, self-directed learning, ethical conduct and professionalism
  • Demonstrating an understanding and support of the mission, vision and values of MCW and our affiliate partners
  • Working with faculty to optimize their understanding of the promotion process
  • Mentoring faculty to facilitate their accomplishments towards promotion
  • Assisting in Faculty recruitment, selection and appointment processes
  • Working with the Departmental Chair and the Department Administrator in determining Leaves of absences, and professional and personal leaves without pay
  • Encouraging and embracing diversity across the practice and creating an environment of professionalism, collegiality and respect.
  • Increasing national visibility for the practice through enhanced clinical, research, and academic achievements
  • Leading and coordinating local workshops and seminars on professional development
  • Supporting high-quality education programs across the entire spectrum of learners including faculty, community-based providers, and consulting physicians within the peri-operative environment
  • Participating in and representing MCW and FH in regional and national organizations and societies
  • Overseeing the residency program, fellowship, medical student, and MSA Program Directors, SNA rotation at Froedtert Hospital Director, Directors of all outside GME rotators (ENT, Plastic Surgery, Critical Care), and Advanced Practice Provider rotations in Anesthesiology
  • Managing Wednesday morning Grand Rounds Schedule, coordinating speakers, local presenters, and visiting professors. Is responsible for ensuring that the program is compliant with all institutional CME requirements
  • Serving as a member of the Core Residency and Fellowship Progam Evaluation and Clinical Competency Committees, and resident/fellow recruitment committees
  • Compiling resident evaluations of the faculty for presentation to the Chair
  • Overseeing the compilation of yearly documentation of faculty involvement in local educational programs (grand rounds, mentoring, lectures, workshops, daily question creation, journal clubs, etc.) for each faculty member
  • Coordinating with the residency and fellowship directors and administrators to ensure that educational efforts are coordinated and optimized

Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. required; Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred
  • ABA Board Certification in Anesthesiology and active participation in Maintenance of Certification
  • Leadership, organizational, and communication skills as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed environment
  • Strong managerial skills developing operational effectiveness, advising on research priorities, strategic planning, funding needs, IRB submission, and budgeting
  • High research productivity as evidenced by a strong record of extramural grant funding and peer-reviewed publications along with teaching and mentoring experience sufficient to merit appointment as an associate professor at a minimum
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in academic anesthesiology, with at least two years of experience in faculty development. This experience should have included responsibility for program planning and direction
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative research relationships and experience with philanthropic development for research is preferred

 

About the Department of Anesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology at MCW includes 120 clinical faculty members, approximately 90 certified nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants, 10 active research faculty members, 66 residents and 17 fellows in pediatric anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, critical care, regional acute pain and pain medicine. The Department anesthesiology team serves multiple sites both near the Froedtert and MCW campus, as well as several community sites and covers both ambulatory and in-patient services. Affiliated clinical sites include Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW), Zablocki Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Community Memorial and West Bend Hospitals, and four ambulatory surgery centers in SE Wisconsin.

Our education program is highlighted by our highly regarded residency program with positions for 80 physicians-in-training, including interns and residents. We also provide specialty training through ACGME-approved fellowships in Pediatric Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, Obstetric Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine and Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, and additional fellowships in Regional Anesthesia and Neuroanesthesia. Our dedication to training the next generation of physician-scientists is evidenced through our success in recruiting trainees into our NIH training grants (T32 and T35).  In addition to our resident and fellow training programs, we offer a Master of Science in Anesthesia program, one of just 20 accredited programs in the U.S.
